As the world finds out more about Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), myths about this disorder also surface and bring about confusion.
As a provider of ABA Therapy in New Port Richey, Florida we try to educate our patients as much as possible and clarify misconceptions about the condition. Here are some common myths about ASD:
- Vaccines cause autism.
Take this from a behavior analyst, there is no single cause of ASD. Various studies have proven that there is no evidence to link vaccines to ASD. - Everyone with autism is either non-verbal or a savant.
As ASD occurs on a spectrum, impairments in social communication and poor comprehension can vary from one individual to another. This can range from impaired social skills to a lack of speech entirely. - People with autism are best suited for jobs with repetitive tasks.
There is no specific job type appropriate for all individuals with ASD as it is a spectrum disorder. While some adults with ASD may enjoy repetitive tasks, it is incorrect to assume a job is a good match for everyone with ASD. - People with autism cannot form relationships.
While they have impaired social interaction, this does not mean people with ASD cannot form relationships with others. Individuals with ASD can have fulfilling relationships with family, friends, spouses, and children.
